Leonardo da Vinci was man who was fascinated by life. He allowed his internal creative source
to guide him. Leonardo explored topics as broad as the flight of a bird, the
internal organs of the human being and even how military machines might best be
built. Of course, he expressed himself most elegantly through his paintings and
sculptures.
Much like the impressionists who pushed the artistic norms
of their times, Leonardo had the audacity to follow his heart and paint scenes
of Nature that didn’t include any people. Heaven forbid! His courage has earned him
admiration across centuries.
I have always been fascinated by Leonardo. I was lucky enough
to attend an excellent exhibit here in Brussels
the other day. Once again, I was truly inspired to be turned on by life.
We are in r-evolutionary times, not unlike the Renaissance. We
would be wise to see the benefits of expanding our perspectives and skill sets.
An excellent business book that speaks to this is the Medici Effect, published
by Harvard Business School Press. It highlights the need for today’s business
person to be a ‘jack of many trades’ in order to be the most gifted and
creative in their various fields.
At the turn of the century around 1500, Leonardo showed us
that it is possible for a human being to be so expansive that he is able to dream
of things and invent them without knowing if they would ever exist, like flying
machines, bicycles and round army tanks. What have you dreamed of lately?
